The Process of ePrescribing: A Quick-start Guide from DoseSpot
December 7, 2023
Technology is continuing to advance, delivering new ways to help providers improve patient care. One of the most important and widely used tech tools for modernized clinical practice is electronic prescribing, as supported by the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP).
As a provider, you can send an ePrescription in just a few clicks that is guaranteed to make it to the pharmacy. Not only is it proven to reduce medication prescribing and dispensing errors, but it also gives you more time to talk about the notable health concerns and symptoms that prompted the visit in the first place.
Providers are time-starved within a typical patient appointment, so it’s important to find incremental ways to spend more time together. Technology should not be a barrier, nor should it interfere with valuable facetime during an office visit or remote or telehealth appointment. That’s why we have put together this guide to share just how easy it is to use DoseSpot’s integrated ePrescribing software.
If you don’t have an Electronic Medical Record (EMR) system to integrate with, there are standalone solutions available, such as TreatRx.
Choosing the right partner and ePrescribing solution is one thing, but once that solution is in place, provider adoption is what really matters. It must be easy and intuitive.
Here, we break down the DoseSpot solution into only four steps:
- Selecting Your Patient
- Adding a Prescription
- Reviewing Prescription Details
- Checking the Prescription Status
You can also see how it works by watching this 3-minute demo video.
Step 1: Selecting Your Patient
Simply use the search option to find the patient for whom you would like to send a prescription. Once the patient is found, a quick click brings you to their profile, where you can edit patient information, add/edit allergies, add/edit preferred pharmacies, manage insurance coverage details, and initiate the start of a personalized prescription, taking their insurance plan design, coverage, and formulary details into consideration.
Step 2: Adding a Prescription
Select the prescription type. The options include Medication, Supply, or Compound. You can then use our smart search feature to type the prescription name into the search bar and choose the specific form needed (Tablet, liquid, etc). Next, select the prescription strength and the patient’s preferred pharmacy location and effective date. There is also a field to add pharmacy directions such as dosage amount, number of allowed refills, and days’ supply. If you need to add more specific directions, there is also a pharmacy notes section that contains pre-populated “common notes” or the option to customize. Lastly, flag the prescription as “urgent” if needed and save your work with a click.
Step 3: Reviewing Prescription Details
This is a quick verification process to ensure that everything is correct with this pending prescription. When it is confirmed that the prescription is correct, you can hit the “Approve and Send” button. In less than one second, the pharmacy will receive your script.
Step 4: Checking the Prescription Status
After completing the electronic prescription, the DoseSpot software will automatically bring you to the “Active Medication” tab, where you can check the prescription’s status and verify its delivery.
